The Eagles cross country team had unexpected results in today’s 19 team field at the Portage Early Bird cross country meet. Both the girls and guys teams are very young, having mostly freshman and sophomores filling up the varsity spots. The boys are led by lone senior Kyle Chamberlain and the girls are led by a lone junior Alyssa Sanchez. The girls turned in amazing performances winning the meet by one point over Battlecreek Lakeview 67 to 68. Alyssa ran a 19:44 placing 7th over all in a field of 306 runners. Sophomore Melanie Helder placed 9th over all. Freshmen Zoe Louis and Madison Cook ran very strong races, both placing in the top 15; however, it was Allison Frank who made the victory complete. With 300m to go Allison was able to pass a number of runners including Battlecreek’s #5 runner by 1.0 second to give us the victory!!! The girls team also defeated Rockford who placed 3rd at the meet. They were the #5 team at the state meet a year ago.
The boys team also ran strong placing 3rd. Kyle ran a 17:05 placing 12th overall in a field of 347 runners. Two freshmen, Ezra Roerig and Casey Olson were our #2 and #3 runners placing 24th and 26th with respective times of 17:33 and 17:37. Sophomore Dylan Lame finished in 17:52 followed by Junior Derek Sanchez in 17:59. The boys team graduated 3 key varsity runners, and this young squad looks to step right into their shoes and continue the success of Hudsonville distance running.
The team’s next meet is the Cougar Invitational at Grand Ledge August 25th.
