Monday night the Hudsonville Eagles faced off against the East Grand Rapids Pioneers for the Eagle’s Senior Night. After a short ceremony honoring Ethan Jones, Anthony Shepard, and Noah Beyer — the Eagles’ 3 seniors — the teams took to the pool.
Both teams came out strong defensively, only allowing a goal a piece with senior Noah Beyer scoring for the Eagles and Andrew MacGregor for the Pioneers.
The Eagles’ defense continued strong into the second quarter allowing no Pioneers goals while offensively Anthony Shepard and Drew Boeve added 2 more for the Eagles.
After a scoreless quarter, and heading into the second half down 3-1, the Pioneers tried to fight back in the third with another goal from MacGregor and an additional one from Liam Bok. But the Eagles were able to answer back each time with an additional goal from Adam Beyer, Jason Dalman, and a 6 on 5 goal from Lucas Petzold taken from 7 meters out.
In the fourth quarter the Eagles furthered their 6-3 lead with goals from Austin Atwood and Ethan Jones, while again holding East Grand Rapids scoreless. The final score of the night was 8-3 Hudsonville.
Leading the scoring for the Eagles was Senior Noah Beyer with 2, with his fellow seniors Ethan Jones and Anthony Shepard adding 1 each. Austin Atwood, Drew Boeve, Lucas Petzold, and Jason Dalman made up the remainder with 1 each.
The final JV game turned into quite the battle between these two teams. Hudsonville started off winning the first quarter 3-0 thanks to goals from Jake Benson, Josh Haaser, and Josh VandeGutche and some very strong defensive play.
The second quarter EGR fought back, holding the Eagles scoreless while getting 2 goals their own to bring them within 1 at the end of the half.
The third quarter saw 3 Hudsonville goals, 2 from Jake Benson and another from Drew Miller, but the Pioneers answered back each time to push the score to 6-5 for Hudsonville heading into the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers managed to add another goal in the fourth while holding the Eagles’ scoreless, leading to a 6-6 tie at the end of regulation play. The teams decided to finish their season fighting for the win and it went into overtime.
The Eagles were unable to find the back of the net in either of the overtime quarters, while allowing 3 EGR goals, leading to a well fought 6-9 defeat in the teams final game of their season.
While the JV season is now complete, Wesley Fields, Josh Haaser, and Josh VanderGutche will continue playing Varsity during the post-season tournaments, as they have been doing all season. They’re also being joined by Ethan Springer, Adam Simon, Drew Miller, and Jake Benson who are moving up for post season play as well.
This weekend the teams will be competing in the District Tournament, hosted for the first time by Hudsonville. The Eagle’s go into the District 1 bracket ranked 3rd and will face 2nd place Jenison at 9:15am on Saturday. With their 3rd place seeding, Hudsonville is guaranteed a spot in the Regional Tournament the following weekend at East Kentwood.
