The Lady Eagles had an amazing weekend not only hosting the 2017 Michigan Water Polo Association but also taking 1st place to become your 2017 MWPA State Champions.
Their first game was Friday night at 7:45pm versus Ann Arbor Huron. The Lady Eagles started off by going up 6-1 in the first quarter vs the #5 ranked River Rats. The Lady Eagles showcased their handful of offensive threats by having 5 different girls score in the first period alone. The Eagles continued their offensive dominance throughout the game with a final score of 16-6. Goals were scored by Alaina Lubbers with 8, Maddy Worst, Grace Boeve, and Claire Tuttle all ended the game with 2 goals, Serena DeJonge and Emily Tuttle ended the game with 1 goal each. Analise Patsiavos helped keep the Eagles goal safe with 10 saves.
The next game was played late Saturday morning vs the Saline Hornets. The Hornets have been bouncing between the #1 and #2 spot in the state all season, and the Eagles were prepared for the challenge. The girls attacked from the beginning with Claire Tuttle winning the sprint and the team ended the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. The Eagles held their lead through the half 6-3 and ended the game with an 11-5 victory. Maddy Jones helped keep the ball in the Eagles hands with a solid 4 steals. Analise Patsiavos had a huge game yet again with an amazing 19 saves. Alaina Lubbers lead the team offensively with 5 goals. Emily Tuttle followed closely with 3 and Claire Tuttle, Maddy Jones, and Serena DeJonge each netted one goal.
The Lady Eagles had a nice long break before the State Championship game at 7:30pm vs the Rams of Rockford. Rockford was the #1 team in the state and beat the Eagles for the Regional Championship 2 weeks earlier. The Eagles were focused, fired up and ready for revenge. The game started with a huge defensive stop by Eagles #3, Maddy Worst, which lead to an exclusion and a quick goal by #15, Serena DeJonge.. The Eagles got their 2nd goal less than one minute into the game from a beautiful bar in by Maddy Worst. The Rockford Rams got their first goal of the game on a power play, off speed lob shot just 2 minutes into the start. The Eagles bounced right back with an amazing cross-cage bar in by freshman, Claire Tuttle. Senior captain, Alaina lubbers ended the first quarter with 3 back to back goals leading the Eagles to a commanding 6-1 lead after the first period. The Rams were not done and fought back to tie the game up at 7 with 6:26 remaining in the 4th period. Just 16 seconds later Hudsonville sophomore, Grace Boeve scooped up a rebound in front of the Rockford cage and slammed it into the net giving the Eagles an 8-7 lead. The next possession down the pool the Lady Eagles forced a turnover on the Rams which lead to a counter attack by Alaina Lubbers and she scored her 5th goal of the game. The Eagles showed their defensive power denying the Rams a goal for 5 and a half minutes. The Rams got their final goal with 21 seconds remaining in the game to bring the Eagles lead back down to 1. With a score of 9-8 the Eagles put the ball into the hands of Senior Captain Emily Tuttle, who protected it for 11 seconds and passed it to Senior and State MVP, Alaina Lubbers to finish off the State Championship game. Scoring for the Eagles were Maddy Worst, Grace Boeve, Claire Tuttle, and Serena DeJonge all with one goal each. Alaina Lubbers led the team yet again with 5 goals. Emily Tuttle did an amazing job shutting down the Rams at the 2 meter position and Analise Patsiavos had yet another amazing game with 12 saves.
Huge congratulations to everyone at Hudsonville. The girls could not have won it without the overwhelming support if their friends, family, and entire Hudsonville community.
