This was a very good hard fought game by both teams. East GR jumped out to an early lead after the 1st quarter with a 12-9 lead and we were able to fight back and tie up the game late in the 2nd quarter before. Olivia Brown scored on the inbound with a heads up play throwing off an Eagle defender and then stepping in and scoring. The Pioneers extended their lead in the 3rd quarter, out scoring the Eagles 20-13 in the 3rd quarter and taking a 9 point lead into the 4th quarter. The Eagles dug deep and fought back with great defense, holding the pioneers to no field goals through the 1st 6 minutes of the 4th. The Eagles took the lead by 4 with just over a minute remaining before Jillian Brown drove the length of the floor and score a basket and got fouled. After she made the free throw, the Pioneers forced a turnover on the inbound and were able to score with 19 seconds left. The Eagles called timeout with 12 seconds left. With 2 seconds on the clock down by one, Arinn King was fouled and went to the line where she made one of the two free throws to tie the game at 48. East Grand Rapids grabbed the ball as it went through the net and called a time-out. The only problem was, they were out of time-outs and it resulted in a technical foul. The Eagles sent 4 year varsity starter Kasey DeSmit to the line where she hit both free throws giving the Eagles a 50-48 lead and they had the ball to inbound. After the inbound the clock ticked away and the Eagles came out on top.
This game was Kasey DeSmit’s 100th varsity game for the Eagles. This feat has only been accomplished by 26 players in the history of the Girls Basketball in the state of Michigan and only accomplished by 3 other Class A players.
Leading the way for the Eagles tonight were:
Arinn King with 18 points
Kasey DeSmit with 10 points
Skylar Scholten with 7 points
Kendall Griffioen added 6 points and played a great game defensively as well.
The Eagles play Thursday Night in the Regional Final at Zeeland East @ 7:00pm against Muskegon.
