The Girls Water Polo team traveled to East Grand Rapids over the weekend for the West District 1 Tournament. The team had a bye on Friday based on their #1 seed in the District.
On Saturday morning they faced West Ottawa, who had beat Jenison on Friday evening to advance to the semi-final game. The Eagles played a consistent game averaging 2 goals per period. Leading the goals scored were Madeline Worst (3), Maddy Jones (2), and Grace Boeve (2). Madeline Worst also continued to contribute to the offensive play with 4 assists. Defensively sophomores McKenna Brink (4) and Claire Tuttle (3) led the team in steals and Annalise Patsiavos had 13 block on goal. The Eagles defeated the Panthers 9-6 to earn a place in the District Championship game facing the Grandville Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs, ranked 3rd in the District, had defeated Zeeland earlier in the day to qualify for the Championship game. The Eagles took an early lead in the first period with a score of 2-1. Continuing with a strong offensive game there were able to lead 5-2 at half. 12 of the goals scored where placed by Claire Tuttle (5), Grace Boeve (4), and Madeline Worst (3). Claire also placed 3 assists to advance the offensive play.
While on defense, Madeline Worst had 5 steals and Annalise Patsiavos had 7 blocks on goal. The strong defensive play by the Eagles during the entire game allowed the Bulldogs to only score once each period.
The Bulldogs had 4 exclusions called in the first period, and an additional 4 during the remaining periods of the game which allowed for the Eagles to play on the advantage for almost an entire 3 minutes of the total game. The Eagles won the West District 1 Championship Game 13-4.
With this win the Eagles berthed the 1st seed in the West Regional Tournament and will play the 4th West District 2 Seed Forest Hills on Friday, May 18th at East Kentwood High School. The winner of this game will advance to the semi-final Regional game and earn a place at the State Championship Tournament.
