This season will go down in the History books for many reasons. Although the Covid-19 virus is the one that brought the season to an abrupt halt, I refuse to let that be the memory I take from this season. As a coach, you approach every season with nervousness and anxiety about what the season will hold. You sit down before you start and try to guess what you think could happen or what your record might be, and then you start… AND ALL THAT CHANGES!
Not only did I have the pleasure of coaching one of the most talented girls basketball teams ever, but this the way these girls picked each other up game after game and practice after practice showed me the true meaning of team. If one were to strictly look at statistics, they would not see one player who really overshadowed the rest of the team. Instead they would see a TEAM. Kids who did not care about their own statistics or who hit the last shot, but rather what they did for the team in each game to help them play to the best of their ability.
It is easy at the end of the season to base things solely off of the recognition that the press puts out there, all conference selections, or record breaking stats. But this team is much more than that! This group of girls came together to do something special and to see that cut short the way it did was difficult for everyone involved. Take comfort that the players, the coaches, the parents, the fans and the amazing student section, were all a part of something special this year!
More to celebrate!
The Girls Varsity Basketball Team Finished 22-1 which was good enough for a share of the OK Red Title, winning their 6th District Championship in a row while all 5 of its starters selected to All-conference 1st team or honorable mention and all 5 of them selected as part of the Grand Rapids Area Dream team. This is the most in the history of our school. I am very proud of all of them, but as we all know, it takes a team to win a Championship and that is exactly what we had! We don’t end practice and break huddles yelling FAMILY! It means something to all of us! Forget About Me I Love You (F.A.M.I.L.Y).
In these times of the unknown, take pride in what you have accomplished this season as a TEAM. Understand that without every single player on this team, the memories would not be what they are today. Celebrate the 23 games we were blessed to have together and the life long friends you made along the way! Celebrate the packed student sections and full gymnasiums you were fortunate enough to play in front of, and most importantly Celebrate that you did it all the right way!!
To our seniors: THANK YOU! From the bottom of my heart, Thank you! You have made such an impact over the last 4 years on our program and the younger kids coming up through our program. The impact is something that you don’t always get to see, but having coached for 16 years now, I see it first hand when kids come up to the high school talking about watching you when they were young and wanting nothing more than to be like you. Your leadership and dedication will be greatly missed by everyone in our program and in the stands!
To everyone involved at any level, thank you for making this season one to remember for our teams!
I LOVE YOU ALL!
