The Hudsonville Varsity Football Team used a stifling second-half defense and downhill rushing attack to beat previously unbeaten and state-ranked Grandville 44-21 last Friday evening. The first half saw Hudsonville trade touchdowns with Grandville in the first quarter, but two interceptions slowed the Eagle offense from keeping pace putting them in a 18-13 halftime deficit. Led by amazing offensive line play once again, Ike Irish led the Eagle running attack with 150 yards rushing on 20 carries with touchdown runs of 42, 35 and 10 yards. Senior Davyon Lesure added an amazing 49-yard touchdown run on the first Eagle offensive play from scrimmage in the second quarter. He totaled 78 yards on 7 carries with 2 TDs. Brayden Vredeveld added 40 yards of rushing with a touchdown score in the 4th quarter as well.
The Eagle defense played Grandville’s Full-House T offense tough all evening. After a couple of early scores, the Bulldogs were limited to a 4th quarter field goal after halftime. Brayden Vredeveld led the Eagles with 17 total tackles, 16 of which were solo stops. Linebackers Josh Hoekstra and Greydan Overweg added 8 and 7.5 tackles respectively. Defensive Ends Trevor MacEachern and Bryce Ouding added 7.5 (1 TFL) and 4.5 (2 TFL) tackles. Junior Nate St. John forced a fumble that was recovered by Eagle kicker, Emanuel Dieppa leading to a game-sealing 4th quarter score.
