Late Push Falls Short for Hudsonville Freshman Eagles

By Ryan Szlachcic | Mar 30, 2026 8:16 PM

The Hudsonville Freshman Eagles showed flashes of strong pitching and timely hitting but couldn’t overcome a late deficit, falling 5-2 on Monday. The Eagles were locked in a tight, low-scoring game through the middle innings, thanks in large part to an outstanding start from Trenton Ratuszny. The left-hander was sharp on the mound, working five innings while allowing just two hits and one unearned run, striking out three and walking one to keep Hudsonville firmly in control early. Out of the bullpen, Alex McCoy provided a spark with two quick strikeouts in relief, and Ryan Floriana came in to record the final out of a tough sixth inning, helping limit further damage and give the Eagles a chance heading into their final at-bat. Offensively, Hudsonville didn’t break through until the top of the seventh. Patience at the plate from Gavin Workman, Floriana, and Easton Morton—each drawing walks—set the stage for Micah McPhaul. The ninth-place hitter delivered the biggest swing of the day, ripping a two-RBI single to cut into the deficit. McPhaul led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Morton, Workman, and Dakari Grays each added a hit as Hudsonville totaled five on the day. The defense also contributed with a well-executed double play. Despite the late rally, the comeback effort came up short. The Eagles will look to bounce back quickly as they return home Tuesday for their next matchup against Mona Shores.
