Varsity Softball opened their season with a DH sweep of Portage Northern winning game one 9-0 and game two 13-3 in five innings. The Eagles got a great pitching performance from Sophia VanKempen as she threw a three hit shutout allowing one walk and 12 strikeouts. The offense pounded out 11 hits, led by Tessa Heffelbower with three hits, Kam Stankus, Lauren Luchies, and Kendra Moelker all added two hits each. Kam, Tessa, and Lauren each hit a home run. The defense was also very good as they only made one error but then they turned a double play to end the inning. Game two was also a great game for the Eagles. They had 15 hits in the second game that was shortened to five innings. Tessa had three hits again and added four runs batted in. Leah Veenstra added three hits and three runs batted in. She also hit her first varsity career home run. Kam hit two home runs and had three runs batted in. Lauren and Kendra had two hits in the game. Pairge Visser picked up the win in the circle pitching four innings and allowing four hits and three runs. She had three strikeouts. Callie Naber made her varsity debut after sitting out all of last season after having knee surgery. It was great to see her back doing what she loves. Defensively the Eagles played error free softball and they end the game on a perfect throw from Tessa Pierce to Tessa Heffelbower who made a perfect throw to home plate to cut down the runner trying to score. It was a perfect way to end a great opening day.
