Freshman Eagles Explode for 17 Runs, Complete Doubleheader Sweep

By Ryan Szlachcic | Apr 22, 2026 12:22 AM

After taking an early punch, the Hudsonville Freshman Eagles responded in a big way—erupting for 17 runs across the second and third innings to roll past Grandville in game two of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Grandville struck first with two runs in the top of the first, but that would be the last time they held momentum. The Eagles answered immediately—and emphatically. The rally in the second inning was sparked by toughness at the plate. Gavin Workman was hit by a pitch—one of his two in the game and an impressive four hit-by-pitches on the day—setting the tone. From there, the floodgates opened. An error brought in a run, Micah McPhaul delivered a two-run double, Skyler Slotman worked a bases-loaded walk to score another, Workman came back with an RBI double, Jamison Hugo drew a walk to bring one in, and Alex McCoy capped the inning with an RBI single. Hudsonville flipped the game completely in that inning, scoring eight runs on just two hits to take an 8-2 lead. The biggest swing came from Slotman, who delivered a clutch two-out single to drive in two runs and keep the rally rolling. The Eagles didn’t slow down in the third, hanging nine more runs to put the game out of reach and showcase their relentless offensive approach. Patience at the plate was key all game, as Hudsonville drew 10 walks. Hugo, Tyler Reibel, and Ryan Floriana each collected two free passes. McCoy, hitting out of the eight spot, led the charge with two hits in two at-bats, while McPhaul went 1-for-2 with a team-high three RBIs and added two stolen bases. The Eagles were aggressive on the basepaths all game, swiping five bases total. Hudsonville also showed grit across the lineup, taking hit-by-pitches from Buchanan, Feenstra, Morton, and McPhaul, continuing to apply pressure and create scoring opportunities. On the mound, Trenton Ratuszny got the start, going three innings while allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out three without issuing a walk. Finnegan Rayla came in and struck out three in one inning of relief, and Ty Dunbar shut the door with a scoreless inning, striking out two. Defensively, the Eagles were sharp, playing error-free baseball. Hugo led the way behind the plate with eight putouts, controlling the game throughout. With the Hudsonville Eagles taking both games in the doubleheader, they now turn their attention to Thursday, when they’ll travel to Grandville looking to keep the momentum rolling and completing the sweep.
