The Hudsonville Freshman Eagles used a fast start and steady pitching to take down Unity Christian 7-2 in game one of Friday’s doubleheader. Unity Christian got on the board first with a groundout in the top of the first, but the Eagles wasted no time responding. In the bottom half, Micah McPhaul sparked the rally with a single, followed by a walk from Tyler Reibel. Skyler Slotman then reached on an error that allowed McPhaul to score and tie the game. Brady Buchanan delivered the big swing of the inning, ripping a triple to bring home both Slotman and Reibel and give Hudsonville a 3-1 lead. The Eagles continued to build momentum in the second inning. Ty Dunbar showed toughness by wearing a pitch to reach base, and McPhaul followed with a single down the left field line. Reibel added another base hit to center, and Dakari Grays contributed with a productive groundout—each play resulting in a run as Hudsonville extended its lead. Hudsonville added an insurance run in the fourth inning, stringing together singles from Reibel and Slotman to push the advantage even further. On the mound, Grays got the start and delivered a solid outing. The right-hander went four innings, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two and walking two. Trenton Ratuszny came on in relief and shut the door, tossing a scoreless inning while allowing no hits and striking out one. Offensively, Buchanan provided a key spark in the middle of the lineup, driving in two runs with his first-inning triple. Slotman, Reibel, and McPhaul each collected two hits to lead the way. McPhaul also made an impact on the bases, swiping two bags as part of a four-stolen-base effort for the Eagles. With the win, Hudsonville carried strong momentum into the second game of the doubleheader.
