Hudsonville Freshman Eagles capped off Friday’s doubleheader in dramatic fashion, rallying late for a 3-2 walk-off win over Unity Christian. Locked in a pitcher’s duel for most of the game, the Eagles found themselves trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Unity Christian struck first with a run in the second and added another in the top half of the fifth, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. On the mound, Finnegan Rayla was outstanding. The right-hander delivered a dominant performance, tossing all five innings on just 48 pitches while allowing only one hit and two runs (one earned). He struck out two and issued just one walk, keeping the Eagles within striking distance all game long. Unity Christian’s starter was equally sharp early, racking up five strikeouts and keeping Hudsonville’s offense quiet—until the fifth. With one out and nobody on in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles began to piece together something special. Trenton Ratuszny was hit by a pitch to spark the rally, and Landon Meduna followed with a disciplined walk. Ty Dunbar then delivered a clutch single down the right field line to bring home the Eagles’ first run. Micah McPhaul stepped in next and battled through an impressive at-bat before lining a single to center field, tying the game at 2-2 and sending the dugout into a frenzy. With momentum fully on their side, Tyler Reibel lifted a fly ball that was dropped in the outfield, allowing the winning run to score. Even without the miscue, the ball was deep enough to likely bring the run home, sealing a hard-fought comeback victory for Hudsonville. Offensively, Meduna, Dunbar, and McPhaul each recorded a hit, with Dunbar and McPhaul driving in key runs during the final inning. The Eagles’ resilience and timely execution completed the sweep and provided an electric finish to the day. Hudsonville now turns its attention to Tuesday, when they’ll travel to West Ottawa looking to keep the momentum rolling.
