The Hudsonville Freshman Eagles opened Tuesday’s doubleheader in dominant fashion, cruising past West Ottawa 17-1 behind a massive fifth-inning outburst and strong pitching across the board. Hudsonville set the tone early, getting on the board in the first inning when Andreson Visser grounded out to bring home the game’s first run. The Eagles broke things open in the second inning, scoring six runs on just two hits. Skyler Slotman delivered a two-run single, while aggressive baserunning and pressure forced a West Ottawa error that brought in two more. Visser added an RBI single, and a wild pitch capped the inning as Hudsonville jumped out to a commanding lead. But the biggest statement came in the fifth inning, when the Eagles erupted for nine runs. The lineup turned over with relentless production up and down the order—Finnegan Rayla drove in a run with a single, Landon Lameris worked a bases-loaded walk, and Ty Dunbar added a run with a productive out. Slotman doubled in another, Easton Morton and Visser each followed with RBI singles, Tyler Reibel drew a walk to force in a run, and Landon Meduna added yet another RBI knock to cap the explosive inning. On the mound, Micah McPhaul got the start and was sharp, allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings while striking out three. Gavin Workman followed with two solid innings of relief, giving up one run on one hit while striking out two. Ryan Floriana closed things out with a dominant final inning, allowing one hit and striking out three without a walk. Offensively, the Eagles totaled nine hits but made the most of every opportunity. Visser led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, while Slotman and Visser each drove in three runs. Meduna was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, and Trenton Ratuszny showed great patience, drawing three walks. As a team, Hudsonville worked seven walks and consistently applied pressure. With the convincing win, the Eagles carried plenty of momentum into game two of the doubleheader.
