The Hudsonville Freshman Eagles battled back from an early three-run deficit to defeat Rockford 5-3 in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Rockford came out swinging early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a pair of doubles and adding another run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. But the Eagles responded in the bottom of the second and completely shifted the momentum. Andreson Visser started the inning with a single, and Kaden Condon followed with a big double. Alex McCoy, courtesy running for Visser, scored on a Brady Buchanan groundout to put Hudsonville on the board. Moments later, Condon made an outstanding read on a ball in the dirt and raced home to cut the deficit to 3-2—a heads-up play that felt like the turning point of the game. Dakari Grays took that momentum to the mound in the top of the third, settling in with a quick 1-2-3 inning to keep Rockford off balance. The Eagles then grabbed the lead in the bottom half. Tyler Reibel worked a walk, and Grays followed with another free pass. Carson Weemhoff came through in a huge moment, ripping a two-out double to score Reibel and Eli Feenstra, who was courtesy running for Grays, giving Hudsonville a 4-3 advantage. Hudsonville added an important insurance run in the fourth inning with aggressive baserunning. During a first-and-third pickle situation, Ty Dunbar broke for home and successfully stole it to extend the lead to 5-3. On the mound, Grays was strong after the early innings, finishing with five innings pitched while allowing four hits and three runs. After Rockford’s early success, he settled in and took control, helping shut the door the rest of the way. Weemhoff led the offense with two RBIs from the middle of the lineup, while Visser, Condon, and Weemhoff each recorded a hit. Dunbar made his presence felt all over the field, stealing two bases and covering plenty of ground in center field while recording four putouts. The comeback win gave Hudsonville game one of the doubleheader and continued the Eagles’ impressive winning streak.
