Strong pitching and timely late hitting lifted the Hudsonville Freshman Eagles to a dramatic 3-2 win over Byron Center in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Both teams battled on the mound throughout the afternoon, but the Eagles found a way late to secure the comeback victory. Skyler Slotman led the way both on the mound and at the plate. The right-hander started the game for Hudsonville and recorded eight outs while allowing just one hit and two runs, only one earned. At the plate, Slotman was perfect, going 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple. Byron Center struck first, taking advantage of a groundout to score two runs and grab an early lead. Hudsonville chipped away before delivering in the fifth inning. Trailing 2-1, Ty Dunbar started the rally with a single, and Slotman followed by crushing a triple to center field to tie the game at two. Moments later, with pressure mounting on Byron Center, Slotman raced home on a passed ball to score the walk-off run and seal the win for the Eagles. Dakari Grays was outstanding in relief, tossing 2.1 shutout innings while allowing no hits and striking out three to keep Hudsonville within striking distance. Dunbar also had a strong day offensively, collecting two hits in two at-bats. Both Dunbar and Slotman were aggressive on the bases, each stealing multiple bags as the Eagles finished with five stolen bases in the game.
