Varsity Baseball Wins District Title

The Hudsonville Varsity Baseball Team won it's third straight District Championship on Saturday at West Ottawa defeating Zeeland West 9-3 in the semi final and rival Jenison Wildcats 6-4 in 8 innings. The the semi final win, Coleton Vander Ploeg picked up the win going 5 strong innings with 6 Ks and no BBs. Will Pennington picked up the save finishing the last two innings with 3 Ks. Senior Catcher, Trent Van Klompenberg led the offense with 3 hits and a RBI. Colin Baugher added a big 3 run homer in the 4th inning. Caeden Kennedy chipped in with two hits, a double, run and RBI. Braylon Miller added two hits, Sac, SB and RBI. Ty Ladd had two hits, run, and HBP. Graeme Crooks added a hit, run and 3 SBs. Harry Phillips scored 2 runs on 2 BBs and HBP. In the District Championship game, Josh Vander Lugt pitched a gutsy 5.1 innings giving up only 3 hits with 3 Ks (his 4 runs were all unearned). Will Pennington picked up the win in relief going the last 2.2 innings with only 1 hit and 3 Ks. Braylon Miller was again good at the plate with 2 hits, 2 runs and a big go ahead RBI in the the top of the 8th. Graeme Crooks added two big RBIs (a single which tied the game in the 5th and an extra insurance run in the top of the 8th with a sacrifice fly). Colin Baugher had the other 2 RBI (single in the 1st and on a HBP in the 5th). Sophomore Jack Arens did some nice base running as a CR for the catcher in the 8th inning scoring the go ahead run. The Eagles stole 9 bases in the champ game. Their 5 Hit By Pitches for the today broke their own school record from last year (99), it's now at 102. Hudsy advances to Byron Center to play the Bulldogs on Wednesday, June 3 at 4:30 pm in the Regional semi final.
